Exercise Could Rival Drugs in Preventing Colon Cancer Recurrence — Home Doctor Service on the Costa del Sol

22/07/2025

Colorectal cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths globally. While surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are still the foundation of treatment, researchers are paying closer attention to what happens after. A recent international study has confirmed that structured exercise can play a powerful role in lowering the risk of recurrence, and in some cases, may rival or even outperform medication.

At Helicopteros Sanitarios, we prioritise long-term health outcomes. Our Home Doctor Service on the Costa del Sol provides personalised, ongoing support for patients navigating recovery, including those rebuilding strength and resilience after cancer.

The Study: Exercise vs. Standard Advice

The Colon Health and Lifelong Exercise Change (CHALLENGE) trial followed 889 people who had been treated for stage 3 or high-risk stage 2 colon cancer. All had completed surgery and chemotherapy. The study divided participants into two groups:

  • Exercise Group: Followed a three-year programme supported by physical activity consultants. The aim was to complete 3–4 sessions of moderate exercise per week, typically brisk walking for 45–60 minutes.

  • Health-Education Group: Received general information about healthy living but without any structured support or routine.

What the Results Showed

After nearly eight years of follow-up, researchers found:

  • A 28% lower risk of cancer recurrence in the structured exercise group.

  • A 37% reduction in overall mortality for those who followed the programme.

  • Higher five-year disease-free survival: 80.3% in the exercise group vs. 73.9% in the health-education group.

  • Improvements in physical function, reduced fatigue, and better emotional well-being.

Importantly, these benefits were not tied to weight loss. The driving factor was simply the consistency of movement.

Why It Matters

Physical activity is increasingly recognised as a critical component of cancer recovery. It supports the immune system, helps reduce systemic inflammation, and contributes to mental clarity and mood stability. For patients recovering from colorectal cancer, the benefits can be life-changing.

Unlike many treatments, exercise comes with few risks and can be adapted to the individual. What matters most is that it’s done regularly, with the right level of support.

Making It Sustainable

Many patients want to stay active, but motivation and structure can fade over time. That’s where guided care makes a difference. Ongoing check-ins, tailored routines, and home-based programmes lead to better results—and better quality of life.
